Grand Opening Ceremony for The African American Library at the Gregory School

The 50 Million Pound Challenge - Are you ready Houston?

Houston has been challenged by the 50 Million Pound team to become a healthier City.

The Mayor’s Wellness Council has partnered with the 50 Million Pound Challenge to help Houston Get fit and Get Moving. Started by Dr. Ian Smith, the 50 million Pound Challenge encourages all Americans to take a pro-active stance and make positive lifestyle changes to reduce obesity in our communities.  (more…)

Inaugural 50 Million Pound Challenge “Walk Off”

Dr. Ian Smith and the Mayor’s Wellness Council would like to invite you to the Inaugural 50 Million Pound Challenge “Walk Off” on Saturday, September 12 from 5-7p.m.  This historic event is all about bringing people together to take steps towards living longer, healthier lives.

This fun,festive, family oriented event will be held at Emancipation Park located at 3018 Dowling St. Houston, TX 77004.  The Challenge “Walk Of” will be approximately  a one mile walk around the perimeter of the park.  Once the walk is completed we welcome you to learn more about creating and maintaining healthy behaviors at our Wellness Festival inside Emancipation Community Center (which is located on the park grounds).  We will have health information, education, and activities for all ages to participate in at the Wellness Festival.

Free on-site registration will be available the day of the walk at Emancipation Park from 4-5p.m.

Third Annual Hip Hop for HIV Awareness

The Houston Department of Health and Human Services-Bureau of HIV/STD and Viral Hepatitis Prevention has teamed up with KBXX-FM “97.9 The Box” , AIDS Foundation Houston, NAACP-Houston Branch, Amerigroup Community Care, Planned Parenthood, Cricket Wireless, and other community based organizations to host the HIP HOP for HIV Awareness Campaign.

International Challenge Day 2009

Looking for a Physical Fitness Challenge? Well, join the exercise challenge as Houston competes with other cities internationally. Get Moving Houston would like to have ONE MILLION EXERCISERS participate in some form of physical exercise for at least 15 minutes on Wednesday, May 20th ! After you have complete your physical fitness activity, report your results by e-mail to challengeday2009@cityofhouston.net no later than Thursday, May 21st .  

If you are a fitness instructor, you may report for their entire class/group. Thanks for helping Houston accept the “Challenge” of International Challenge Day.

Texas Round Up 2009

The Texas Round-Up 10K, 5K and Family Mile will be held  in Austin, Texas on April 25, 2009. Race weekend begins with a health and fitness expo showcasing vendors and sponsors. The race is followed by a fitness festival where families can enjoy live music, food, fitness demonstrations and family friendly activities. Participants spend months training for Texas Round-Up, and for several participants, the Texas Round-Up is their first race, making the events a very special accomplishment and a true celebration of healthy living.
